“So that’s it,” I finish, glancing at the two ghosts I’m sitting in between. They were as rapt an audience as Ruby was. “We’re hoping you could—”

“Lie to the cops,” Ruby deadpans.

I wince. “Yeah.”

My phone rattled a couple of times on the bar while I was talking, but I didn’t check it yet. Texts could wait, and the phone call I expected from the cops didn’t come. I reach for the cell, but I don’t quite get there.

One of the ghosts clears his throat, a sound that always makes me re-examine my sanity. I mean, why does a ghost need to clear their throat, huh?

Anyway, one of the fellas clears his throat and it distracts me from grabbing my cell. He’s dressed like an old railway worker, like one of the folks who used to shovel coal into the firebox, complete with the cool looking hat and dungarees.

“Sonny,” he says, raising his paintstripper my way. “I can’t speak for anyone else, and I’ve never heard of any creature like this Sin-Eater of yours, but if you need me to lie to the law, I will. You seem like a decent enough sort.”

“Thanks, pal,” I reply, taking a sip of the coffee Ruby made for me. “I appreciate it, but if the cops could talk to you, I’d have no problems, would I?”

“Well…” the fella replies, shrugging. “We could make ‘em see.”

I laugh. “What? Just kill Henry and Lori a little bit and bring them back so they can see this wonderful world? Wouldn’t that put me in their good books!”

Railroad man smirks and holds out his hand. “Name’s Fred Rener.”

“Pleasure,” I say, taking his cold hand.

“When you’ve stopped bonding, Nick? Nice to see you making friends, and all, but is now the time?” Ruby shakes her head. “Jesus.”

I suck on my teeth. “So, the cops…”

“You don’t even need to ask,” she plants her hands on her hips. “But remember, you—”

“Owe me,” I finish. “I know. Plenty of times at this stage.”

“And don’t you forget it, wise guy.” Ruby rounds the bar and heads for the stairs. “I’ll let Guz know the story. Not the full one. Just you’ve been here all day.”

“Can we trust him?” I ask, meeting her eyes.

“Nick, I’ve known him for thirty years. You don’t even want to hear about the things he’s seen. We can trust him.”

Ruby heads up the stairs, and a lull takes a hold of the Styx lower and, not to say I’m often a huge fan of lulls, but this one is nice. It has, without a doubt, been one of those days and short of stopping Sin-Eater so the killings come to a halt, I ain’t sure what to do. I’ve no idea what he is, never mind where he comes from and how to put an end to the freak. Sure, I’ve gleaned a few details, and I can drive it off, but all that does is put the fucker onto the scent of some other sinner. The creature’s gotta eat.
